The release of Kannum was awaited with a lot of expectation, since it was the first Tamil movie of its kind. As a sequel to the Kannum series, Kannum Kollaiyadithaal provides us a lot of great surprises and comedy too. The way Kannum Kollaiyaditha handles comedy is astounding. The movie is very well organized and plotted in accordance with its theme.
In Kannum, we see the progression of Kannum, the goddess of luck. She has been having a rough time, ever since her husband Kallatithata returned to earth. Though the movie is never overtly sexual, there are a few laughs, so don't let the title put you off. It's for fun and entertainment only, but one could probably get some fun from the scenes, once they see the movie.
The movie seems a little formulaic. As much as one might like some structure, it may also be difficult to watch the movie all the way through, in one sitting. It also doesn't help that the story starts to drift a little for some audiences and I think this is more due to the subplots that aren't as properly handled in the movie.
I also felt that the story was a little too contrived in Kannum. For example, in the early part of the movie, there is an attack on Kannum by some demons, who do not look like the original ones in the Kannum series. It doesn't really make sense, but this is the way that the story was scripted. In the later part of the movie, Kannum receives a new partner and it is rather obvious that she has been bitten by a demon.
Kannum isn't just another science fiction movie, with a slightly more twisted twist than the average sci-fi movie. It's a science fiction with a difference. There is a lot of psychological elements at work here and the movie does successfully capture the film's tension.
The screenplay is actually quite unique. It has a unique feel to it. A few scenes simply do not fit into the rest of the movie. There are a few scenes that seem to go on forever. This is because of the medium and the low budget.
The movie's subplots are good to watch. It's not over long, but it does have its share of subplots that will definitely not leave you bored. It's easy to see where the story is going when you get to see the movie, but can be confusing at times, especially if you haven't seen the series.
I would recommend this movie to people who have seen the other Kannum series, especially if you enjoy the series. You can even watch this movie after watching the series, if you feel like it.
