Shawshank Redemption is a movie that has been long in the making. Originally, the movie was meant to be a three part movie with a sequel being released a year after. However, after the release of the first film, which was a huge box office success, Universal decided to release a second installment to its popular series of films. The result was a film that would remain a fan favorite for a number of years.
With that said, one can understand why people are so enthusiastic about this particular movie. They have long awaited the second part of the series and when it finally came out in 2020, it was embraced by critics and movie lovers alike. Because of this, the follow up films were made to top the original and now fans are eagerly waiting for a third movie.
This film definitely needs no introduction because it is one of the most recognized movies ever released. It is best known for the characters portrayed by Al Pacino and John Heard. The real story behind the movie was that Al Pacino's character, Red, was sentenced to death and he found himself on a "Shawshank Prison".
Red, who was a previously smart and not so violent man, suddenly found himself in a situation where he could no longer think clearly. He had become so far gone that he believed that his real identity was someone else entirely. The only way he could come to terms with this fact was to resort to survival of the fittest - which got him into a situation where he could no longer survive.
It was later revealed that Red was actually the brother of another inmate that had killed a guard in the prison. He was put into a situation where he had to kill another man to save his own life. It turned out that the brother had killed that man and needed to kill Red to protect his brother.
With all of that being said, it really wasn't possible for Al Pacino to act anything other than a total jerk. While he may be a unique choice to play Red, John Heard and Russell Crowe did a fantastic job at bringing this character to life. The acting is so perfect in The Shawshank Redemption, that it has been called "a movie without acting".
The acting in this movie was so good that it even won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. Also, James Earl Jones, who played the villainous "The Duke" in the original movie, was such a hit with the fans that he received two sequels. He is even featured in the second movie that was released. It just goes to show how effective and unforgettable this movie is.
If you haven't yet seen this movie, then now is the time to go out and see it. With so many different versions of the movie available on DVD and Blu-Ray, you are sure to find a version that you will enjoy.
